ADKINS, JOHN EARNEST, age 87, passed away on September 13, 2023. He was predeceased by his parents, Noble Earnest Adkins and Lillian Hogan Adkins; his sisters, Cathryn Marie Adkins, Gwendolyn Little Teems, and Myra Faulk; and his siblings-in-law, Sammie Faulk, Earnest Little, L. K. Little and Jane Adkins. He is survived by his wife, Betty Clay Adkins; his children, Janice Adkins and David Adkins (Tracie); his siblings, Doris Adkins Little and Sidney Adkins (Wanda); and his step-grandchildren, Kaylin Thomas and Jeffrey Thomas. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.
ADKINS, KENNY, age 56, of Vestavia Hills, passed away January 4, 2008. Kenny grew up in Coalburg and attended Mineral Springs School. He was employed with Trinity Contractors for 16 years where he was an Executive Vice President and a principal owner. He was also a Charter Member of Liberty Crossings United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie J. Adkins and Altha Adkins; and a brother, Tim Adkins. He is survived by his wife, Amy Eagleson-Adkins; daughters, Nicole Adkins and Tabitha Muglach; brother, Joel Adkins; grandson, Hunter Muglach. ADKINS, LAURA MYRTLE, age 94, of Coalburg, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2016. Mrs. Adkins and her husband, the late Emmett W. Adkins, help founded Coalburg Independent Baptist Church. She was well known and loved by the entire Coalburg community. She is survived by her five children, Jimmy Ray Adkins (Lorna), Pat Rhodes (Ron), Frankie Adkins, Ronnie Joe Adkins (Janet), and Shirley Kelley (Harry); a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
ADKINS, RONNEY JOE, of Fultondale, AL, age 69, went home peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on March 8, 2018, surrounded by his family who considered him the most loving husband, best Daddy, and greatest Pop ever. Ronney enjoyed road trips, spending precious time with his sweetheart of 52 years, his children and grandchildren, walking at Black Creek Park, and good seafood! He was known and loved by many friends. He was a graduate of Tarrant High School and was a faithful and dedicated employee of the Alabama Power Company for 41 years and retired as a Control Center Operator in 2008. He was president of the IBEW Local 841 for two terms. Ronney went on to continue his career of electrical safety and assessment as an assessor with Storm Services from 2015-2018. He was a trustee and lifetime member of Coalburg Independent Baptist Church and a member of The Sons of The American Legion, Post 255. Mr. Adkins was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Myrtle Adkins. Ronney is survived by his wife, Janet, children; Ronald Adkins and Jon and Tracy Adkins-Abernathy, grandchildren; Rachel, Zachary and Megan Adkins; Grace and Catherine Abernathy, brothers and sisters; Jimmy and Lorna Adkins, Ronnie and Patsy Adkins Rhodes, Frankie Adkins, Harry and Shirley Adkins Kelley and many well loved nieces and nephews.
ALFORD, ESTELLE ABNEY, 90, of Watson, went home to be with the Lord on August 16, 2009. She was the oldest surviving member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church after becoming a member in 1941. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde W. Alford. She is survived by her grandson, Dr. Doug (Michelle) Alford; great-grandchildren, Eli Alford, Caleb Alford, and Seth Alford; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Alford. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
BAGGETT, DAVID JOSEPHINE (DENSMORE), age 63, of Soddy Daisy, Tenn., ended her walk through life at home with her family by her side on October 22, 2009. David Jo grew up in Fieldstown and attended Mineral Springs School from the first through the ninth grades. She is survived by her husband Fred A. Baggett and children: Juanita (Barry) Braddock of Fultondale, Ala., and Howard L. (Tracey) McConnell, Jr. of Hixson, Tenn.; stepchildren: Holly G. (Fred) Didden, John Messina, and William Jones; grandchildren: Destini and Faith McConnell, Coleman Braddock, Jennifer Messina, Alexandra Urban, and Sergi Jones; great grandchildren: Jake Messina; sister: Olyve Marie Furgason, and a host of close family and friends. David Jo was a former member of C.W.A. local 3902, and a longtime member of Ladies Auxiliary to the V.F.W., Kelly Ingram Post 668 and the D.A.V. Auxiliary in Birmingham. During her last years, "Granny Jo" (as she was fondly known) dedicated most of her time to volunteering at Gann Middle Valley Elementary School and to substitute teaching at numerous Chattanooga area schools. She loved helping the minds of children grow. In lieu of flowers, "Granny Jo" has asked that contributions be made to Gann Middle Valley Elementary School Library Fund at 1609 Thrasher Pike, Hixson, Tenn. 37343. Her last wish was to be able to provide quality educational reading material to grow and expand the minds of the children of the future she would never meet. David Jo loved Mineral Springs School and was a dear friend and supporter of the Mineral School Web site, providing identifications for photos of many otherwise unknown students as well as generously sharing photos from her own collection.
BEATTY, GERALD B., age 54, passed away on December 14, 1997.
BEATTY, MILDRED AVIS, age 101, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 6, 2021. She was a long-time devoted Christian and member of Gardendale Mount Vernon Methodist Church. Mrs. Beatty was born on September 8 1919 to James Thomas Franklin and Burla Franklin in Eldorado, Alabama. She later moved to Fieldstown, Alabama, near Gardendale, where she lived with her husband, George B. Beatty, daughter, Wanda F. Salmon, and son, Gerald B. Beatty. Mildred attended Mineral Springs Elementary School, Graysville Junior High School, and Minor High School. In connection with her later work, she attended The University of Alabama at Birmingham College. Mrs. Beatty was employed as the lunchroom manager at Mineral Springs Elementary School, McGraw Edison Company, Singer Sewing Machine Company, and then worked many years at Occupational Rehabilitation Center, as an accomplished seamstress, and artistic decorator. She was honored by receiving The Good Samaritan Award for the City of Birmingham, in 1979, for her work with challenged individuals, assisting them in becoming productive citizens in the community, and the work place. Mildred was a civic-minded person, working at food banks, and other functions, in her community. Mrs. Beatty is survived by her daughter; Wanda Faye Beatty Salmon; daughter-in-law Millie Beatty; grandchildren, Carol Ruth Salmon, Keith Beatty (Michele), Shannon Phoenix (Taz), and Kimberly Avis Hollis; great-grandchildren, Sara Grace, Graham, Hensley, Eli, and Caleb Beatty, Rachael, and Laura Kirby, Erin, and Jacob Hollis; niece, Gloria Fields Roberts; and special friends, Joyce Fields Blankenship, Walter and Tillie Robertson; along with many nieces, nephews, neighbors, and church friends. Mrs. Beatty is predeceased in death by her husband; George B. Beatty, her son; Gerald B. Beatty, her father and mother; James Thomas and Burla Franklin, her sisters; Ruth Hand and Edith Fields, her nephew; Granville Vaughn, her niece, Frances Mansell; grand-son-in law Jeff Hollis, and many other family and friends.
BEST, JACK H., age 87, of Gardendale, Ala., passed away on June 9, 2017. He was born in Jasper, Ala., on April 16, 1929. He was a long-time member of the Decatur Highway church of Christ. He loved the Lord and served in the church as a teacher, elder, and deacon at the Tarrant and Decatur Highway churches of Christ. Jack retired after 35 years of service in Walker County and Jefferson County school systems. He served as a coach, teacher, principal, and school administrator, and was Principal of Mineral Springs School in the early 1960s. His hobbies included gardening, camping, reading, and traveling with the Senior Saints and Travel Club. He loved being a son, brother, husband, father, and POP. He will be missed by everyone whose life he touched. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Lacy and Daphne Best and a brother, John Best. Jack is survived by his loving wife Billie Sue Best who have been happily married for 63 years; his children, Rhonda (Mark), Shelley (Emmitt) and Jack (Michele); sister, Sara Clem; grandchildren, Brandon, Jordon, Ryan, Scott, Lacey, Lauren, Garrett, and Gavin; great grandchildren, Berkley, Brenden, Noah, Colt, and Jackson, and a host of family and friends.
BONINO, KATE, (MISS KATE), age 95, of Birmingham, died February 6, 2006. She was a graduate of Auburn University. She was an elementary school teacher in Alabama for more than 40 years and retired from the Jefferson County Board of Education, where she spent the majority of her career. BOOTH, IRENE, age 94, longtime resident of Coalburg, passed away on May 6, 2007. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother. She was a member of Faith Tabernacle in Morris and was loved and admired by everyone who knew her. Irene was preceded in death by her husbands Thomas W. Graves, Sr. and Joseph E. Booth; sons, Thomas W. Graves, Jr. and daughter-in-law Edna Graves, James C. Graves and Donald E. Graves. Irene is survived by her daughters, Betty Graves Wills and her husband Bob, Gloria Graves Pennington and her husband Buck, Rebecca Booth Little and her husband Larry; daughters-in-law, Bobbie Graves, and Sylvia Graves, 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren; brother, George Pennington; sisters, Neddie Sligh and Louise Green; and a host of nieces and nephews.
BURR, JAMES MICHAEL, age 71, of Graysville passed away Monday, January 2, 2017. Mr. Burr served his country as a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a faithful member of Bivens Chapel Methodist Church, and also a member of Graysville Gun Club, and the Gideons. He was an avid hunter and Alabama football fan. Preceding him in death were his father, James Marion Burr; mother-in-law, Ida Fulmer; brother-in-law, Johnny Fulmer; and beloved cat, Miss Buddy. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Sandra Fulmer Burr; of Graysville; mother, Mary Burr of Watson, AL; brothers, Al Burr (Donna) of Guntersville, Tim Burr (Marie) of Dothan, Randy Burr (Georgia) of Birmingport, and Erroll Burr of Graysville; his beloved cats, Scruffy, Peeper, Sammy, Gracie, and Blue; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
BURTON, JIMMY WAYNE of Gardendale was born July 26, 1944, and went home to be with the Lord on January 1, 2019, at the age of 74. Jimmy was preceded in death by his mother, Daisy Burton and father, Carl Burton. He is survived by his brother, Roger D. Burton (Cecilia); son, Wayne Jennings; daughter, Susan Melat; nieces and nephews.
BURTON, DAISY MARGURITE CORNELIUS, age 95, passed away on July 26, 2016. Daisy was a member of Meadow Brook Baptist Church and a former member of Gardendale First Baptist Church. Daisy was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Carl Burton. She is survived by her sons, Jimmy Wayne Burton and Roger Dale Burton (Cecilia); grandchildren, Bradley Roger Burton (Candice); Brook Burton Dunham (William); Barry Dale Burton; Susan Melat and Wayne Jennings and several great grandchildren. Daisy was known far and wide for her wonderful pies served at the old Triple L and Little Spot restaurants.
CAUSEY, CLARENCE RICHARD JR., age 86, a recent resident of Decatur, Georgia, and a former long-time resident of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 30, 2013. Richard, who served as principal at Mineral Springs School from 1957 to 1959, was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and after serving his country in Hawaii, he received degrees from Birmingham Southern College and the University of Alabama and a doctorate from Auburn University. As a professional educator, he served as a teacher, principal, and district assistant superintendent. He spent 11 years with the Alabama Department of Education before retiring in 1988. He had a love for playing tennis and was inducted into the Birmingham Southern Sports Hall of Fame. He was also an avid fan of golf, football, and the Atlanta Braves. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Richard Causey, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Julia Murdock Causey; his children, Nancy Winters (Everett), Cindi Chandler (Jim), Richard Neil Causey, and Scott Causey; his stepchildren, Kristin Price (Jared), Jonathan Pilkerton (Frazier), and Michael Pilkerton (Katie); seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. CLOUD, ANN (MOORE) age 81, was born November 1, 1941. She passed away at her home in Mount Olive, AL, on April 4, 2023. She is preceded in death by her father, Walter E Moore, her mother Neddie M. Sligh, step father Robert Eugene Sligh, sister Gail Knight, brother Eugene Moore and daughter Brandi Goodwin. Ann leaves behind her loving husband of 39 years, John Cloud, sons Jack Porter, Jr. and Adam Cloud, daughters Lisa Hicks, Suzanne Porter and Bridget Melton (Kerry), grandchildren Ashley Jordan (Michael) Megan Dull (Corbin), Gregory Nall, Joshua Nall (Alisha), Kasey Clayton (Sammy), Brittney Hicks (Robert), Chase Melton, Caitlyn Goodwin, Kendall Melton, Grayson Goodwin and Ocean Cloud along with 9 great grandchildren. Brothers Edgar Moore (Virginia) and Allen Moore (Sangwan), a multitude of nieces, nephews and cousins. Ann was a member of Gardendale First Baptist Church and retired after 22 years with the USPS. COLVERT, JANICE (COLLIER), age 76, passed away in the early morning May 6, 2023. She is preceded in death by her parents, RJ & Lucille Coller, sister Edie Koonce, and Grandson, Logan Tippett. She is survived by her children, Dennis Wagner, Traci Wagner and Patrick Wagner; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
CORNELIUS, WILLIAM SR., age 83, of Mt. Olive, died December 25, 2006. He was a retired electrician from P.E.M.C.O. with 30 years of service. He was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist and a Veteran of WWII and member of Masonic Lodge in Mt. Olive. He is survived by his sons, William "Billy" Cornelius, Jr., of Gardendale, Thomas J. (Cindy) Cornelius of Springville, AL; daughters, Sharon (Carol) Thompson of Fultondale, Joy (Wesley) Greer of Woodstock, GA; 1 sister, Daisy Burton of Hoover; 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
CORNELIUS, WILLIAM M. JR. "BILLY," age 66, of Ashville, passed away August 9, 2011. Billy was born on November 19, 1944, to Bill and Daisy Cornelius. After attending Mineral Springs, he graduated from Minor High School and worked for Toledo Scales until his retirement. He is survived by his children, Angie McIntyre (Kerry), Allision Abbott and Brandon Cornelius, his grandchildren, James, Brandi, Josh, Ashley and Gracie, his brother, Jerry Cornelius (Cindy) and sisters, Sharon Thompson (Carl) and Joy Greer (Wesley).
CORNELIUS, ELOISE NORMA SORENSON, age 96, died on December 12, 2019. She is survived by five children, Jackie Morris, David A. Cornelius, Betty (Dennis) Magraw, Mike (Kelley) Cornelius, and Mark (Donna) Cornelius; sisters, Sharon (W.G.) Cornelius and Judy (Charlie) Wilson; nine grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren with one expected; special loved ones, Peggy Cornelius, Stephanie Holmes and Gail Griffin; and a host of other extended family and friends. Eloise was preceded in death by her husband, David William Cornelius and son-in-law, Gary Morris. She was a member of Gardendale First Baptist Church where she loved attending Worship on Wednesday services her Welcome Sunday School Class. Eloise retired from Bradford Elementary School where she was secretary to the principal. She exemplified the Proverbs 31 woman. Her kind, caring nature and desire to be a peacemaker were and of the fruits of the Spirit in her and when she walked in the room people immediately felt loved. She exercised her body by attending Body Recall Class at Gardendale Civic Center and exercised her mind by watching game shows, working crossword puzzles, and reading encyclopedias. This was her explanation for her longevity of life.
DOUBLEMAN, MICKEY JOE, age 67, passed away on April 20, 2016.
FAULK, MYRA "MICKEY" (ADKINS), of Coalburg, age 84, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2015. She retired from Fultondale Elementary School after 23 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sammie Faulk; daughter, Ruby Ann Sands; and sister, Gwen Little Teems. Mrs. Faulk is survived by her daughter, Brenda Burnette (Danny); 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; brothers, John Adkins (Betty), and Sidney Adkins (Wanda); sister, Doris Little; son-in-law, Richard Sands; and numerous nieces and nephews.
FIELDS, HELEN (BRAKE), age 90, of Gardendale, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2007. As a child, Helen lived in "Dogtown" and entered the first grade at Mineral Springs School in 1922. A bright student, she was double-promoted from first grade to third grade and again from fourth grade to sixth grade. Although two years younger than most of her classmates, she still graduated at the head of her class. For about 12 years, throughout the 1950s, Helen served the school and the students she loved as a member of the lunchroom staff. For those students, she will always remain an important part of their Mineral School experience. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Alf Fields. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Blankenship; granddaughter, Louan (Mark) Burgess; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Annabeth Joyce Burgess; brother, Melton “Doodle” Brake; special friend, Mildred Beatty; her most recent family, Family Comfort Hospice; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. FIELDS, WILLIAM E., age 90, of Gardendale, AL, passed away on Monday, December 5, 2016. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who was very much loved and will be greatly missed. Mr. Fields proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII in the Philippines (Pacific Theatre). He retired after many years of service to Jefferson County and was a longtime member of Gardendale's Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Mr. Fields was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mabelyne Elliott Fields. He is survived by his daughter, Pam Fields McKinney (Doug); his granddaughter, Megan DiPiazza (Mark); and great grandchildren, Devin DiPiazza and Piper DiPiazza; a brother, James W. Fields (Nell).
FRANKLIN, INEZ, age 89, passed away December 7, 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alford "Coot" Franklin and 2 brothers: William and Narvel Franklin. Inez is survived by her son, Tim Franklin; her daughter, Cynthia Strange (John); 2 grandchildren: Shay Veazey (Sara) and Neil Veazey (Charity); 7 great grandchildren; Tyler, Brady, Roston, Ethan, and Georgia Veazey, Jake and Alan Wilson; 2 brothers: George and H.B. Franklin; her close friends: Dovie and Alton Riethmaier; and a host of extended friends and family.
GIBSON, MICHAEL "LYNN," age 56, of Altoona, AL, passed away Friday, August 15, 2008. He was from Republic Alabama and attended Mineral Springs School along with his brothers and sisters: Tommie Jean, Judy, Larry, and Jerry Gibson. He was retired from Roadway Express. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom (who worked at Brookside Pratt Mining Company) and Imogene Gibson; brother, Larry (February 25, 2007); and sister, Judy Hood (January 19, 1999). He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Susan Horsley Gibson; children, Tommy, Danny, Jeffery, Wesley, and Angela Gibson Alexander; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, Jerry and David; and one sister, Tommie Jean Gibson O’Breirne.
GLIDEWELL, GLADYS LILLIAN, age 82, of Watson, passed away on June 18, 2006. She was a member of Sharon Heights Baptist Church and retired from the Birmingham Board of Education. She was the lunchroom manager at Mineral Springs School from the early '60s until the closing of the school. Her daughter Lou Ann Cornelius (Budgie) of Brookside and son Brent Glidewell (Laura) of Watson attended Mineral Springs. Other survivors include sister Mrs. Mary Lou Williams of Birmingham and brother Mr. Olan Long of Graysville; grandchildren Billy Glidewell (Laura) of Watson, Donny Glidewell of Naples, Florida, and Candace Crews (Scott) of Watson; and great grandchildren Aya Williams and Caleb Crews.
GOOCH, ERNEST LEE, age 70, of Brookside, passed away on October 5, 2007. He was a loving father and husband and was employed with Arlington Properties. He is survived by his wife, Wilma Bittle Gooch; daughters, Debra Clark and Dawn Estis of Mt. Olive; sons, Lee, Alan, and Kenneth Gooch all of Brookside; grandchildren, Amanda Payne, Alicia Clark, Derek, Damon, Corey, Samantha, Jade and Brady Gooch, Destinee, Steven and Zac Estis; great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Madison Bailey and Preston, Crimson and Austin Gooch; brothers, Edward (Sue) Gooch, Donnie (Teresa) Gooch, Roger (Shelia) Gooch and Butch Gooch; sisters, Brenda (Rex) Whitten, Patricia (Dickey) Manley, Ginger Lynn, Frances Pickle and Bobbie (Pete) Smith. GOODE, JACK N., age 73, of Watson, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Lucille Goode; brother, James “Ed” Goode and nephew, John C. “Dody” Goode, Jr. He is survived by sisters, Betty J. Cupps and Nell Westbrook both of Watson; brother, John (J. C.) Goode, Sr. (Carol) of Birmingham; sister-in-law, Kathy Goode of Graysville; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends; and special friend and Caregiver Donald McDonald of Watson.
GOODWIN, GAYLE N. "HENRY," age 81, of Fultondale, passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2014. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in Germany from 1953-1955. He served on the Fultondale City Council from 1968-1972. He retired from the trucking industry, during his career he served one term on the Board of Directors for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Henry also owned and operated Fultondale-Goodwin Septic Tank. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emma and Wesley Goodwin; 3 brothers, Joe, Carl, and Doug Goodwin; and by 3 sisters, Pearl Pennington, Minnie Goodwin, and Jane Loggins. He is survived by his son, Ken Goodwin (Julie); grandchildren, Misty Goodwin, Edina Morales (Freddy), and Patrick Horsley (Shannon); great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Devon, Alaina, and Caleb; sister, Juanita Leatherwood; and special friend, Sue Parham.
GREER, MAURINE (BENNETT) of Watson, AL, passed away on August 10, 2006. She was survived by her daughter, Midge (Stephen) Cornelius of Watson. She retired from the US Postal Service in 2004. She was a lifetime member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church and served there as Treasurer for many years. She taught as a substitute teacher, lunch room lady, and secretary at Mineral Springs School. She was very loved in her community in which she lived her entire life.
GURGANUS, GRADY, age 80, made his flight to his eternal home on July 12, 2020. Grady was preceded in death by his parents Martha and Bill, brothers James Arie, Mac, and Roland. Grady lived most of his life in Coalburg. He attended Mineral Springs School. He will be missed by many many friends. Grady is survived by his loving faithful wife Sherry; daughters Melinda Bishop (John) and Bonni Kozak (Mike); grandson Jacob Bishop and siblings Kathyrn Lynn, Betty Alexander, George Gurganus (Jeanne), Gladys Penny (Tommy), Rose Vickery (Frank), Danny Gurganus (Jamie), and Mary Harpman (Michael); sister-in-law Sue Gurganus, and a host of nieces and nephews.
GURGANUS, RAYE ROLAND, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 31, 2014, at the age of 64. He was retired from the Gardendale City Works Department. Raye was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Gurganus; father, A W Gurganus and a brother, James Aire Gurganus. KERR, MATTHEW DENNIS, age 65, of Gardendale, passed away Friday December 25, 2009. He was a member of Gardendale's First Baptist Church and the Empty Nesters Sunday School Class. He worked for DuPont, then worked for and retired from U.S. Steel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Annie Bensko Kerr. KERR, NANCY (SALTER) age 75, of Mt. Olive, passed away on April 15, 2022. Nancy was a member of Gardendale First Baptist Church and retired from UAB. She loved making crafts, Alabama football and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis and her father, Robert Salter. KOONCE, EDITH "EDIE" (COLLIER), age 83, passed away peacefully on March 9th, 2020, at her home near Warrior, Alabama, after a long battle with Alzheimers. Edith Marie Collier was born on August 11, 1936, in Birmingham to R.J. and Lucille Collier. Together with her brother Sonny and her sister Janice, Edie lived in Coalburg for most of her childhood. Edie was close to her uncles, aunts, and cousins, particularly Joyce Carlisle of Gardendale. Edie's father R.J. was the founder and long-time pastor of Coalburg Baptist Church. Edie graduated from Minor High School in 1954. She married Ernest Tucker in 1955. They raised three children, Terrell, Duane, and Denise Tucker. She remarried on January 25th, 1988, to Jerry Koonce, and they lived together in their home near Warrior for the past 28 years. Edie is survived by husband Jerry Koonce, her three children: Terrell Tucker of Hayden, Duane Tucker of Columbia, MD, and Denise Tucker Nelson of Jasper; Four step children: Roxanna Koonce Davis of Chicago, IL, Kelly Koonce Wunderlick of Naperville, IL, Jerry Koonce of La Porte, IN, and Jody Koonce Brutsman of Charlotte, NC; Brother Shirland "Sonny" Collier of Warrenton, Oregon, and sister Janice Collier Colvert of Mount Olive, AL. She is also survived by five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
LEATHERWOOD, ODIS DARRELL, age 74, of Woodstock, AL, passed away July 30, 2018. Darrell retired from Jim Walter Resources with 32 years of service. He was an avid Alabama fan, loved to Coon hunt, also loved Nascar racing. He was a loving husband, devoted father and proud papa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Odis and Barbara Leatherwood and his brother, Bo Leatherwood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude LeCroy. LOGGINS, ELISE "JANE" (GOODWIN), age 79, passed away October 18, 2013. Jane was born August 7, 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Wesley and Emma Goodwin. She was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church in Muscle Shoals, Alabama for 25 years, where she served as a Sunday School Worker and assisted with the Training Union. She has been a member of Republic Baptist Church in Republic, Alabama, for the past 13 years, where she had served as a Sunday School Teacher. She was a member of Zeta Chi Epsilon Sigma Alpha, a women's association that worked to meet many individual and community needs. She loved and cherished her family and friends as they did her. Her laughter, wit, and smile lit up the room. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Jane is preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Emma Goodwin; brothers, Joe Goodwin, Carl Goodwin and Doug Goodwin; sisters, Minnie Goodwin and Pearl Pennington. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Charles W. MANSELL, FRANCES FIELDS COLE, Age 69, of Morris, AL, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, June 19, 2012. Frances graduated from Minor High School in 1961. A retired bookkeeper, she was an endearing mother and lifelong friend to all she met. She was a member of Unity of Faith Ministry in Gardendale. She is survived by her husband, Roy Mansell; her son, Jim Cole (Judy); her daughter, Edi Heavner Mikul (Andy); her grandchildren, Jimmy Cole (Brittaney), and Haley Heavner; her sister, Gloria Roberts (Carl); and a host of loving family and friends.
MINYARD, SR. CURTIS LEE, age 76, of Trussville, a former resident of Brookside and the Forestdale area, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2008. He was a Master Sergeant in the U. S. Army, a veteran of the Korean War where he served as a paratrooper. He was also a reserve Green Beret; he was past commander of the Ensley Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; he was retired from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as a mining inspector. He co-wrote a safety manual used nationally by MSHA to train MSHA inspectors and miners. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jeanette Thomas Minyard; brother, Edward Minyard and sisters, Dorothy Cooley and Ida Mae Nolan. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Bobbie Jean Minyard; children, Judy Bynon and husband Bobby, Julia Kaye Simpson and husband Jim, and Curtis Lee Minyard, Jr. and wife Rose; grandchildren, Sara Bynon, James Robert Simpson and wife Carmen, Jackie Bates and husband Mike, Jonathan Simpson, and Brittany, Tiffany and Brandon Minyard; great grandchildren, Isaac and Katelyn Simpson and Jordan, Hope and Erin Bates; brother, Otis Minyard; sister, Margie Bell; half-brothers, Eugene and Bobby Minyard; several nieces, nephews and friends.
MINYARD, ULYSSES EUGENE, age 72, passed away on August 23, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, several brothers and sisters and his six dachshunds. Gene is survived by his partner of 39 years; Rodney Basenburg, brother; Bobby Minyard, and cousin; Edna Furman as well as many other family members, nieces and nephews. He was a member of Temple Emanu-El, a lover of music and animals.
MOORE, JAMES CLIFFORD, age 86, of Coalburg, passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2016. He was a member of Walker Chapel Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of W.W.II. He is survived by his daughter, Sharon "Shay" Tomblin (Steve); son, Barkley Moore (Brenda); grandchildren, Amanda Barrett (Darrell), and Matthew Tomblin (Zanita); great-granchildren, Jackson and Zoey; sister, Betty Williams; Brothers, Jerry Marshall Moore (Patsy), and Robert Wayne Moore (Dianne); longtime friend and companion, Jan Merryfield; several nephews, friends, and family.
MORDECAI, MICHAEL HOWARD, age 58, of Birmingham, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2006. He was a softball player and avid golfer, coached Little League for numerous years, and was an umpire for 39 years. He worked in the coal mines from 1966 to 1986, was a business owner from 1986 to 1988, worked at Thompson Tractor Company from 1987 to 2003, and was employed at Carraway Methodist Medical Center at the time of his death. He was a loving and caring husband, father, and friend. Mike attended Mineral Springs School for several years in the mid-1950s. ODEN, BILLIE HYDE, age 87, passed away on March 16, 2016. He died in Gulfport, Mississippi, while peacefully sleeping, in the presence of his daughters and family. Billie Oden was loved and respected by family, friends, and colleagues for his exemplary life, love of family, and dedicated public service. Billie was preceded in death by his wife, Dale Oden, of Joppa, Alabama. Billie left his farm home as a teenage to enlist in the Army Air Corps. While serving with the Occupational Forces in Japan following WWII, he was seriously injured in an ambush. Returning home from the military after six years of service, Billie earned a bachelor of science degree from Jacksonville State University. He later earned postgraduate degrees from Auburn University and the University of Alabama. Billie served as Principal of Mineral Springs School from 1959 to 1960 and later became Principal of Pinson Valley High School, where he served for many years. He served the JEFFCO Board of Education in his last decade of service as the Assistant to the Superintendent of Jefferson County Schools. He faithfully served the school systems of Alabama with integrity and honor.
PENNINGTON, GEORGE ALVIN SR, age 88, of Coalburg, passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Pennington; and daughter, Elaine Koker. PENNINGTON, STANLEY "RONALD," age 69, a resident of Warrior, Alabama, was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on October 31, 1948, and passed away peacefully on February 7, 2018. Ronald loved his family and enjoyed all the time he spent with them, he will be greatly missed. Ronald was preceded in death by his parents, Huey and Pearl Pennington; his wife, Carole Wolford Pennington; a brother, James Pennington, and a sister, Linda Kay Jackson. PIKE, MATTIE MARIE (SORENSON), age 73, of Coalburg, died June 17, 2006. She was a member and pillar of New Hope Ministries. For most of her life, she was a devoted and loving caregiver for numerous children throughout the local area. Survivors include brothers Sander (Betty) Sorenson, Jr., and C.T. PINYAN, DORA JIM (CUPPS), age 86, went home to her Lord on January 13, 2018. She lived in the Fieldstown Community of Gardendale for most of her life, residing in Kimberly for the past several years. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, J.C. Pinyan; daughters, Sheila (Terry) McAnnally, Sherri Pinyan, and Sandra (Darren) Holmes; grandchildren Devin (Brittani) McAnnally, Jordan Holmes, Jacob Holmes and SN Jeb Holmes; great-grandchildren, Mary, Claire, and Sarah McAnnally. She is also survived by her special friend, Rebekah Fitts, as well as many other family and friends. Mrs. Pinyan was a member of Beechwood Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was an office-coordinator at Fultondale Elementary for over twenty years and an avid fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide. She had a special love for babies and her hobbies were crocheting, working puzzles and coloring.
PINYAN, ETHEL (CORNELIUS), age 96, life-long resident of Gardendale, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006. She still lived on land that her great grandfather homesteaded. She attended Cliff, Milner, Gardendale, and Mineral Springs Schools (see here Mineral Springs graduation certificate here). She was a homemaker who enjoyed flowers, Fa-So-La singing and family gatherings. She was the oldest member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church in Watson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; son, Roger; and daughter, Martha Templin. Survivors include daughter, Mary (Robert) Salter; son, J. C. (Dora); son, Bud (Dianne); daughter-in-law, Carolyn Pinyan; brother, William (Bill) Cornelius; sister, Daisy Burton; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
SALTER, JAMES ROBERT, age 83, of Gardendale, died October 17, 2006. He was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church in Gardendale and current member of Union Hill Baptist Church in Oneonta. Mr. Salter retired from U.S. Steel 23 years ago after 37 years of service. He was a 50-year Mason at the Mt. Olive Lodge and a WWII Air Force veteran, serving in Italy in the 15th Air force. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Pinyan Salter; children, Nancy Salter (Dennis) Kerr of Gardendale and Debbie Salter (Jeff) Childress of Gardendale; grandchildren, Kimi Kerr (Josh) Thompson of Mt. Olive and Jaret Childress of Gardendale; great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Dutton and Cody Dutton; brothers, J. B. Ruby Ann, who grew up in Coalburg, was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be truly missed by all who knew her. SLIGH, NEDDI R. MOORE, age 97, passed into eternal Life on February 6, 2016, at her home in Gardendale, surrounded by her loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mchulda Pennington, 6 brothers, 6 sisters, husbands Walter Moore and Eugene Sligh, and a daughter, Gail Moore Knight. She is survived by sons, Ed Moore (Virginia), Gene Moore, Allen Moore (Sangwan); her daughter, Ann Cloud (John); a sister, Louise Green, 17 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, 20 great-great grandchildren, and a host of beloved nieces and nephews. Neddie was a member of Gardendale First Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School for a total of 60 years in the various churches she attended throughout her life. She lived a life of service to her Lord and to her family. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but we are comforted by the knowledge that she is in the presence of our Lord and the loved ones who welcomed her into her new life in Heaven.
SORENSEN, CHRIS JACKSON, age 71, of Mt. Olive, died November 15, 2008. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Mt. Olive. He was a veteran of the United States Army, where he received several Marksmanship Medals. Mr. Sorensen retired from National Can after 40 years of service. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors, he also enjoyed NASCAR and all forms of racing. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dayna Sorensen, brothers, Ernest Sorensen and Freddy Sorensen, sister, Fay Thrasher. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and a dear friend to many. He will truly be missed. SORENSEN, SANDER "SONNY" N. JR., age 85, of Coalburg, passed away on July 18, 2015.
STRANGE, CYNDY (FRANKLIN), age 63, formerly Cyndy Veazey, died of cancer in her home on September 18th, 2016. Cyndy received her undergraduate and Masters degrees with highest honors from the University of Montevallo. She taught at Lincoln High School for six years and taught English at Central Alabama Community College for almost 25 years. Cyndy loved life, loved to teach, and loved to travel. Earlier this year, she realized a lifelong dream, to see the Amazon Rainforest. Mrs. Strange is survived by her husband, John, two sons, Shay and Neil, from her first marriage, and five grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Wally.
STRICKLAND, JANIE (GOBER), passed away in June 2017. Janie, who grew up in Coalburg, was an active member of Walker Chapel Baptist Church and a booster club member of Fultondale High School for many years. Mrs. Strickland retired from Avadian Credit Union as the office manager for many years and was also the secretary for Hurst's Towing. Janie loved her Savior Jesus Christ, her family, traveling, several clubs, Elvis, and NASCAR. Mrs. Strickland was preceded in death by her husband, William McKinley Strickland Jr., parents; John Uley and Dorothy Gober; 3 brothers, John, Randy, and Glen Gober. She is survived by 1 son, William McKinley Strickland III of Fultondale; 2 grandsons, William Mickinly Strickland IV of Trussville, and James Michael Strickland of Clay, AL; 2 sisters, Dorothy Goodwin of Springville and Lola (Harold) Adair of Fultondale, AL as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
TEEMS, GWENDOLYN (ADKINS) LITTLE, age 72, of Coalburg, died October 19, 2006. She was retired from Fultondale Elementary School, where she was Lunchroom Manager for 26 years. She was a member of Coalburg Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was preceded in death by her sister, Catherine Adkins; parents, Noble and Lillian Adkins. Survivors: husband, Jerry Teems; son, Larry (Rebecca) Little; stepsons, Jeff Scott Teems (Dana) and Brian Lee Teems; daughter, Luanne Little (Johnny); grandchildren, Shelli (Tommy) Simmons, Kasey (Michael) Hammett, Jordan, Hayden, Chandler, and Grayson Teems; great grandchildren, Katyanne, Andrew, Ryan, and Ashley; brothers, Sidney (Wanda) Adkins and John (Betty) Adkins; sisters, Myra Faulk and Doris Little; sister-in-law, Jackie Sapp (Sonny); brother-in-law, Ricky Works (Belinda). WIYGUL, MARGARET (GOODE), age 82, of Brookside, passed away on Monday, October 22, 2007. She is survived by sons, Terrill Goode of Watson and Rob (Judy) Goode of Oneonta (both graduates of Mineral Springs School); grandchildren, Terri (Danny) Byrne of Virginia, Marshall (Angel) Goode of Texas, Robin Shapielack of Gardendale and Carol (Michael) Herren of Morris; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Polly Moore of Watson; and brother, Cecil V. Graham of Arkansas.
YATES, JUNE DELANE (LYNN), age 60, and her husband, Joseph Ward Yates, age 69, of Mt Olive, died August 28, 2008. They were members of Sharon Heights Baptist Church. She is survived by her brother, Michael (Carol) Lynn; nieces, Tonya Lynn and Rhonda Cummingham; and many other family and friends. They both were survived by special friends, Lee and Nancy Doss, Byron Doss, Ken and Judy Wolfe and Dave and Mary Conkle.
